A 12,000m² office complex was consuming approximately 680,000 kWh/year of grid electricity at a blended rate of 28p/kWh. The client's primary objectives were reducing operational expenditure and improving energy resilience during peak demand periods.

Scope

We designed and installed a 185 kWp solar PV system across three roof sections, integrated with a building management system that optimises load shifting and monitors real-time production/consumption data. The BMS also controls lighting, HVAC, and EV charging infrastructure on site.

Results (First 12 Months)

  • Energy consumption from grid reduced by 42%
  • Peak demand reduced by 38% through load management
  • Carbon emissions reduced by 71 tonnes CO2e/year
  • System performance ratio: 82.3% (within expected range)
"What impressed us was the engineering rigour. Every assumption was documented, every calculation was transparent. The payback has tracked within 3% of their initial projection." — Facilities Director

Industrial Workshop — Heat Pump Retrofit

Heating Demand

A 2,400m² manufacturing workshop was heating with a 60kW oil-fired boiler. Oil prices had tripled since 2019, making heating costs unpredictable and budgets difficult to manage.

Approach

We specified two 45kW air source heat pumps with flow temperature optimization. Rather than attempting to use the existing radiators (which were undersized for low-temperature operation), we installed fan coil units in key zones and retained the oil boiler as backup for extreme cold periods.

Results

  • Heating costs reduced by £14,200/year
  • SPF achieved: 3.1 (close to design prediction of 3.2)
  • Oil boiler retained for backup — operational 4% of heating season
  • RHI payments: £8,400/year over 20 years
"The system has performed exactly as specified. We went from budgeting £25k/year on oil to a predictable £11k on electricity. The difference is night and day for planning purposes." — Operations Manager

Logistics Depot — EV Charging & Load Management

Annual Fuel Savings
£32,000
ROI
1.8 years

A logistics company with 45 light commercial vehicles needed to transition to electric but faced a major question: could their site's electrical supply support 12 chargers simultaneously without a costly DNO upgrade?

Solution

We installed a smart load management system that dynamically distributes available power across all active chargers. Rather than requiring a 400A three-phase upgrade (which would have cost £65,000 and taken 6 months), the load management system allowed all 12 chargers to operate from the existing supply.

Key Metrics

  • Electrical upgrade avoided: £47,000 saved
  • Installation completed in 3 weeks (vs 6-month upgrade timeline)
  • Smart charging software reduced peak demand by 23%
  • Fuel savings: £32,000/year from day one
"The load management was the key. Without it, we'd still be waiting for the DNO upgrade and paying fuel costs. Instead, we started saving in month one." — Fleet Manager
